Robot+ Coffee

If you think coffee is only for drinking, well, you’re wrong. Coffee has one of the most important uses that will benefit our future. Coffee is made up of one of the smallest particles. And as you know for small particles its easy to absorb, and copy the shape of another object and be able to perfectly fit in, just like Play-Dough. Coffee helps robotic arms work the way they do. An example is if you put sand or coffee in a bag and put the bag down on a cup it will slowly fits around the object, somewhat holding it, that is the way a robotic arm simulates. Now with this information scientists were capable of interpreting this into the newest robotic arm. How does this work your asking? Simple, this robotic arm has a very strong rubber material that is contained with coffee particles. These particles as I said before form and fit around a specific object and than a vacuum contained inside the metal part that keeps the rubber bag together sucks and pulls the object. Scientists have tested this and it has worked on many different objects. Even a glass cup was picked up by this arm. Scientists have created this because they believe there are some objects we are not capable of picking up in the correct way unlike this robotic arm that was specialized to pick up an object at a perfect height and perfect pressure. Because people at times tend to put on much pressure on an object and on some to little pressure, but this robot can pick it up without damaging the object.  Right at the moment this robot is small, but because they made so many tet they have decided to make a bigger one and be capable of picking up on object of even 2,000 pounds! But to fill up thi rubber balloon and pick up that weight, there is going to be a whole lot of coffee!

Reflection:
Many of you should already get the impression that this can be very useful for us and our future. Mythbusters, Brainiacs etc. they are all showing how we should improve our life using robots. Imagine having a useful hand like this with you, if something heavy and big comes in your way, well no problem all you need is a rubber bag, a vacuum and some coffee, and the 2,000 pounds are out of your way. This is also very important in emergencies where help can be nowhere to be found you can always use this to move things around in case of a weak or broken hand. I chose this article because I never knew our world can become so advanced with a simple bag filled with coffee and a vacuum, can do everything [and more] then we can with our own hands. This current event was my favorite of favorites!  Seeing our world growing up seems it will never get old…

Hot Temperature!

Today, many people have different interests. Sports, business jobs, and breaking records! In the book ‘Guinness World Record 2011’ this temperature rate was included. But not all the records are about the hairiest man on earth, or who has created a 6 ft. tall cheeseburger in a short amount of time, but a record pulled off not so far ago, meant a lot to scientists! They have reached to the point of the highest temperature in their lab! This is amazing, something that should be written down as part of history. Because, record keeping can always help us compare to our past. We can tell how much we improved over the years, and how it can help that we have made this discovery! As I heard that’s what most successful people do when they get a job like a lawyer, scientists, archeologist etc. Now you’re probably asking yourselves, so give it away what is the highest temperature? Well, ladies and gentlemen, the magic temperature is 7.2 million degrees Fahrenheit!!! This is an amazing discovery! Another question you might ask while reading this is-so what can this do to help the world? Scientists for a long period of time had been trying to discover how our earth was actually created. Many of us believe in the theory of the super nova, or big bang. Both of these “bangs” need high temperature, in order to melt off and create something. By this “hot temperature discovery” so to speak, can help us understand about how planets were created. The temperature our scientists have created is 250,000 hotter than our sun. What actually creates the hot molecules? This plasma is called quark-gluon. This plasma creates the warmth of this ‘mini explosion’. This is in a way a type of explosion, these atoms inside have so much energy that they disperse and they create enough heat to melt; this might reveal  the creation of our earth known to us.


Reflection:

I think that this event will affect us as a whole mostly from all the other current events I write about. I mean after all these years we might’ve finally found out the truth of human creation! Imagine it, that we were all born from an atom, it is amazing. The info that we are getting from these scientists is crucial, and they might be experiments we might not be able to try again in the future. But since this is a reflection I do have a couple of questions: what can this really lead to? How big was the actual energy [plasma] explosion? With this are we capable of creating another planet? With this can we predict when a new planet or universe is made? But I believe I will be researching  this theory for a long period of time, I am avid to know if this info is valid, and if it is true, and I will see if I can get these answers to my questions!

A Material can Remember!

A very unpopular material called Nafion is one of the most used materials in the world. We have been using this material from the ‘60’s. A chemist named DuPont was the founder of this very useful material. This material uses fuel cells. A fuel cell is a cell producing an electric current directly from a chemical reaction. These fuel cells are often used to power up satellites and produce energy for hydrogen. But now in Michigan they have recently discovered the real quality of Niforn. Nifron can supposedly imitate three different shapes. For example if you twist this Nifon material into a oval shape, later on it will remember this and make the same shape that you have shaped it into before. Nifon can’t be tested anywhere, its memorization all depends on the temperature of the place it has been bended, twisted, etc. This material is called what the synthetic polymer and this material cannot be found in nature, this is a man-made material that is made up of different molecules that connect . The molecules contained in this synthetic polymer are found in various weights and sizes. A scientist named Tao Xie has reported that Nafion is a scientific version of Silly Putty. Now, you might ask yourself how has this proven to be valid. Well, as I said the scientist named Tao Xie has reported that this was another scientific version of silly putty, not quite. Xie had tested his hypothesis. The first step he had made to his new discovery was that he heated this material to 140 degrees Celsius. Once the material was heated he made a shape out of it, cooled it off, then did the same thing two more times, but with different shapes. He let it cool of after changing the shape three times .Then he finally decided to test it again, he  heated it back to 140 degrees Celsius and noticed that the material Nafion  changed back to all three shapes slowly. It combined the three shapes together and created a new shape. This brings us to the fact of exploring, and discovering new shapes. What if maybe one day we discover that the shapes we think are impossible to create are easy to make with Nafion? Maybe one day we will actually  create a Penrose triangle! Overall nafion is not the only material that is capable of remembering the shapes it was formed into, but it is one of the latest ones.

Reflection:
This is a very important material we have discovered. It’s funny though, how this material is over 40 years old and we have only discovered its use in the year of 2010. This year has definitely been a successful year for scientists and architects. As we make new foundries and we improve our technology we are capable of discovering new things. This can take us to the top and we might get to our goals that we probably never thought we would be able to accomplish. Now that we have found a material like Nafion, we can discover new shapes, make impossible objects possible, and maybe even come to the discovery of its possible daily use. Maybe this material can be used in our daily lives. Foundries like these can lead to new discoveries!

Frog Mutations

Recently there has been a discovery that is related to frogs. They have tested and observed many different reactions of frogs in different substances. This all started out as a college experiment, with a group of students testing different substances and different hormones on frogs. Many of there hypothesis were correct, and as they suspected, but there was one substance that reacted just a couple of days after it was hypothesized to react. In fact one day a college student had found out that something very unusual was happening in the tank that a hormone called atrazine was put in. Definition: A weed killer used on most corn crops, atrazine can cause organ and cardiovascular damage and is a suspected hormone disruptor. It is also suspected to cause deformities in frogs. See Hormone-Disrupting Compounds. As the students observed they have thought back to what they put into the tank to made sure they have not put in any harmful chemicals. They have figured what was going on. All the tank had was: water, atrazine, and *male* frogs, but the unusual happening was that the male frogs had female frog behavior. Now, since they only had these three parts in the tank they have found out that the reason that is causing these frogs to act female was because of the atrazine. Now some of you might wonder: how do they now they have acted like females? Well first of all these males were attracting frogs the same gender, which is a female feature, it was confirmed that they have found 30% of the males that were put into the tank had adapted female behavior.
As I said, atrazine is used as a weed killer, you might expect these weed killing chemicals in some streams, rivers and lakes. This is very harmful for our environment, now the affected male frogs, now some male frogs are *becoming* female! It is not affecting only the frogs behavior in these lakes rivers and streams, but it is also affecting other animals that live in the water. Being raised in a highly polluted river lake or stream of atrazine it lowers the males’ level of testosterone, which causes them not to attract females. Not only do males loose there hormone but also gain a female hormone called estrogen. These students took to two male frogs and examined them. It happens to be that the male frogs had also produced female reproductive organs, which cause them to mate with other male frogs, and produce baby male frogs.

 Reflection:
            This is very shocking news. To know that so much pollution can cause such a mutation in our eco-system. Some day frogs might become extinct because there will be too many males mutated into females, and not enough males available for reproduction. As I said extinction might be on its way. I found this article very interesting, to think that only a chemical can change a whole frogs life into another direction. When I am older I wish to examine some animals, and find out what the causes of there mysterious extinctions and mutations. Hopefully gaining more knowledge of mutations, and pollution it will help prevent further extinction!

Terrible Oil Spill!

A terrible thing happened on the date of 5. Oct, 2010. What? Well if you watched the news you would know. What really happened was a massive oil spill of red sludge happened. The so-called red sludge is a toxic waste a very harmful waste that can pollute above the normal pollution rate. Of course the pollution can only be overrated depending on the amount of toxic waste that has spilled out, and in my research it says that 184 million gallons of aluminum. This was a lot, it spilled and spread more than the BP oil spill. The BP oil spill caused 200 million gallons of toxic waste, less then the recent aluminum spill. Like many other spills this spill expanded as well. Recently they have said on the news that the oil spill has reached the Danube. This is becoming very risky, Danube is were we get most of our water resources. That is not the only problem, the other problem we will have to resolve is the fact that Danube goes through more than half of Europe. Why might this be a problem. Well one of the biggest problems is, if the aluminum toxic waste passes through all of Danube, it will soon go to the Black Sea then to the Mediterranean and then continue spreading. Which could soon pollute the hole eastern part of the earth!!! :(

This morning i had watched the news again and they have built a dam stopping the toxic waste from spreading the pollution. They did a great job until today. They had found cracks and pieces missing of the dam, there was way to much pressure on the dam for it t hold, and so it is slowly breaking off, which is not good news for anyone that has Danube passing through there country. There is not much we can do because in order to stop this waste from spreading we would need 10 million dollars, which is to much that Europe will ever be able to afford! :-/

Cockroaches as a Cure?

Scientists find many absurd and interesting discoveries nowadays, and this is the most interesting one I heard so far! Cockroaches are found in chips and other foods and I have known that since 4th grade, but to hear that they can actually be a very helpful medicine as well completely blew my mind! Scientists say that cockroaches have a brain that can help fight off various infectious diseases, this is one reason people say cockroaches live even though you step on them, and this is true, thanks to there bacteria- fighter- brain! How do they help? Well their brains might be small and pretty simple but they contain chemical compounds called E. coli and MRSA that they can break down, and usually, kill. E coli is a food contamination bacteria, if anyone eats food contaminated they are surely getting the disease called E coli. But I guess these days you shouldn’t be so worried, thanks to our technology improvements and…we are now assured that taking medicine with the cockroach’s brain can fully cure us. MRSA is also a very harmful disease. No known antibiotic can cure MRSA. MRSA is a type of disease that affects your skin; it affects your skin and is very serious. Since it is really hard for doctors to help prevent these illnesses, we are very lucky to have discovered what the brain of a cockroach really has in it. An interesting fact the scientists have found is, when they investigated the fact that some soldiers that came from the Middle East and were all infected with various sicknesses, and on the other hand they have also noticed that there were many bugs around them that were absolutely not harmed by many of the illnesses that surrounded the soldiers. “Some of these insects live in the filthiest places ever known to man,” Khan told Science News. “These insects crawl on dead tissue, in sewage, in drainage areas. We thought, ‘How do they cope with all the bacteria and parasites?’”
Because these two insects’: the locust and the cockroach have these chemical compounded brains scientists decided to do a test. In one Petri dish they put one of the harmful bacteria and a brain of locust/cockroach, they did not kill all bacteria, but they have killed nearly 100% of the harmful bacteria!!! Of course it’s too much to go to a pharmacy store and ask for a brain of a locust/cockroach to be fully healed, as I said they are still being tested. But let’s hope this helps us in the future, and maybe in the farther future we might have a cure for every illness on earth!

I choose this article because I just simply love insects. If someone had asked me why I honestly wouldn’t have a well thought out answer, but as I read this I know what I would say “ do you like cockroaches?” the answer I would get most likely is “no way, are you kidding me?” then I would give them back a very interesting fact “ well in the future cockroaches, and a type of grasshopper; locust might cure you from a very harmful disease, and you should now know that they are not all icky and ugly, but in fact very helpful!”. Not only did this tell me that our technology is improving, but that it did really raise a bar in our life. Soon technology will become a very daily thing (it is already) but, the kind of technology many scientists, archeologists, and historians use. One day I know we will find ourselves discovering lots, on our own, as there is much to be discovered!

Bio Plastic is a Plastic YOU Want to Use

After watching this video i realized how important it is for us to conserve energy and use bio plastic more often then any other plastics. Why? Well mostly because they are made by natural sources such as vegetable oil and corn starch. Biodegradable plastic are usually used for disposable items such as: pots, bowls, and straws. Bio plastic is also called green plastic, because it can be produced in factories using wind energy, sun, bio fuel, and other renewable energy sources. Another good side of using bio plastics is because, these plastics are bio degradable and can be decomposed. By decomposing these materials we can use it to make the soil richer in your garden. These plastics take less time do decompose then many other plastic items. Though there is a bad side of using bio plastic as daily products. The process of making these plastics re not only long but hard to process, which creates the raise in temperature. Composing also gives contributes to the raise of temarture these days, but using these plastics would certainly cut off some of the pollution we have created in the past! :]

A Final Remedy

These days it’s hard to find a cure for many sicknesses or illness we can get infected by. But now as we are improving technology, we are becoming more developed in many aspects as well as the things we need to survive. However some illnesses are still deadly and we do not yet have cure for them. One of them is chronic stroke. This sickness is caused by dead cells in a specific part of the brain; this can cause long term or permanent disability. Scientists have found a way to make these patient with this illness live easier. As these scientists worked on this cure they had found out that for many years other scientists were searching for a cure, and they eventually found it, but the cure was not permanent it would only last for a couple of weeks or even days . This specific remedy was different. The medicament was discovered Sep. 25 when a group of scientists took in 26 patients that suffered from aphasia and gave them the remedy for some time while they observed them. It turned out that it helped in a way that the were able to recover in a steady pace. Aphasia is another memory loss illness, this impacts the persons left side of the brain, where the language is processed, this means that they have a language disorder, very similar to chronic stroke. "Stroke is the leading cause of disability among adults, more than accidents or complications from Parkinson's or Alzheimer's diseases," said Fridriksson, director of the university's Aphasia Laboratory and an associate professor in the department of communication sciences and disorders. Still they haven’t found a perfect cure that could last forever, but they have found one that could last longer than the other one. This remedy helps them acquire skills that help them communicate easier. This remedy is called the fMRI. fMRI -- an imaging technique more improved and widely used in the past decade -- Fridriksson was able to see the healthy areas of the brain that "take over" the functions of the areas damaged as a result of a stroke.

I chose this article because I think its very interesting, and stunning the way humanity is improving, sure this isn’t a permanent cure, but as years pass scientists might discover a cure that could last forever, and help the patients suffering from this sickness, fall back to normal *or* get a chance to live a normal and happy life like most people on this earth. Hopefully things like this will get their chance to happen one day!

I had a glogster presentation on a element. the element i have been asigned to present was sodium. Sodium has taught me many things, like how different element can combine, and which ones it cant. It is also pretty amazing to know the reactions of the many elements we use in our daily lives. If you think of it this way elements are all around us and they react around us they float around us and they combine as time passes. Sure we can not see them, put to us they are very important...why? Well most certainly because if we didn't know they existed (which we do) we would most likely be living without many foods, for example we wouldn't have tomato ketchup, and another daily item we use made out of elements is soap! Those are not the only things that would be hazard-es to live without, there would also be lots of explosions if we didn't know about elements. As you can see elements is one of the most essential thing in a humans life, and there are many reasons to it; why.

10 Things About Water That You Definitely Didn't Know!!!

1. 70% of every humans body is water!
I think this fact is very interesting, because having the thought of us being more than just skin bones, meat organs etc. but more than half of us is water. so its more than; skin, organs and bones! This is one fact that can be varified that we cannot live without water! :) 

2. At every humans birth about 80% of the infants measured weight is water.
When we were all babies, imagine us being more than half of our weight being water! That's pretty amazing. Water is pretty heavy, and with 80% of our body being water while we were little, we must have weighed a lot, for little babies!

3. Drinking too much water too quickly can lead to water intoxication. Water intoxication occurs when water dilutes the sodium level in the bloodstream and causes an imbalance of water in the brain.
Well yes its true that we live off of water, and yes more than half of our body is water, but water can also damage us. Enough is enough! Never drink to quickly, never drink anything to quickly!
4. Somewhere between 70 and 75 percent of the earth’s surface is covered with water
 Sure i knew this before, we all did. but its amazing to find out that we are not the only ones needing water to survive, earth and the earths crust also needs this water in order to keep us standing and watering the rest of the plants we don't know about. i come to a conclusion that every single thing on this earth is needing water in order to survive, or be create. For example to make paint you would need water and some other substances, for making plastic you would also need water and other special ingredients. 


5. By the time a person feels thirsty, his or her body has lost over 1 percent of its total water amount.
As much as we have water in us, we are also able to lose water. But this only tells you that once your thirsty, your instincts react, and emideatly you should go to the tap or bottle of water..

Watering the Air

As we all know there are many problems with global warming. Global warming is the rise of temperature and that is exactly what’s happening on earth. We have to be more aware of this, and here are a few reasons why. I came over a to a very unusual conclusion; America is now having cooler summers and wetter days. Scientists are thinking that this is because of farming, and more farmlands.  The conclusions come to this; a group of scientists have been studying the weather changes in Chicago and 13 other states in the Midwest. The question is how and why are these temperatures getting lower and back to normal again? Well, at one point farming almost completely stopped, well at least the healthy way of farming. These unhealthy farming companies are becoming more aware of the harm they are doing and so they tried the healthy way of farming. More water and less chemicals, it makes them more money and profit, and now more farms are following in there steps. This means healthier plants, which brings us to healthier air, and the dropping of temperature! J Before I read this I wasn’t  as aware of what water does to the air to make the air warmer and this is what a very famous scientist said it does: Humidity is the measure of how much moisture is in the air. Humid air, which contains a lot of moisture, takes longer to heat up than dry air, Changnon notes. And humid air often releases its moisture through rainfall. As I said the plants are the ones releasing healthy oxygen and moisturizing the air, and this is how it all happens. It takes the water from the ground and through its leaves it lets it out in the air, which moisturizes the air, and cleans it.  But not all the plants let out as much moisturized air as the others; it’s mostly soybean and corn. The group of scientists went on another search and thought of finding out the difference of the past farmlands of these two crops, and now. Before these two plants covered only 57% of the farmlands in the Midwest, now it has increased by 97% of soybeans and corn covering farmlands of the Midwest. As we all notice there is much more rain these days, the days that would be hot and tiring are now wet and rainy, but this rain is only just part of what we call the Water Cycle and it is also a very important thing we need in life in order to survive.

My article was about how we can solve global warming and go back to the time where the air was fresh, and healthy to breathe,  and that there are may ways that help clean the air, plants and rainfall etc. This was very intriguing because I thought that global warming was becoming a life or death situation, but something can be done to fix it! J All these moisturized plants, fresh soil, the Water Cycle; they all have to do with many elements, and this article is mostly about how H2O can help us bring back the weather we can survive in and the life we need in order to stay safe and sound, in our beautiful and natural home, the planet Earth.

  1. In Serbia the rivers that flow here are: Danube, Great Morava. South Morava, Tisa, West Morava, Sava, Drina, Kolubara, Timok. and White Drim.
  2. Danube is the most shared river in Serbia, we share it with 8 countries!Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine. Sava is another river thats shared in Europe, Slovenia, Croatia Bosnia and Herzegovina. Morava is not shared, this is Serbia's river. Tisa is a river shared through 3 countries in Europe Ukraine, Romania and Hungary. Drina is shared in 2 places Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Kolubara is another river that is only found in Serbia, and so is Timok. White Drim is a river shared with Albania. 
  3. The most popular dams and hydroelectric plants are Bajina Basta and   Djerdapska Klisura.

  5.  There are many springs in Serbia one of them is at Ada. This is a man made gazer mainly used for entertainment and decoration. A natural spring is the Great Morava springs.
  6.  A water supply in case of a drought we have our man made river Ada. Some people might think that its dirty because many people swim in it, but as it comes through our pipes, and out our taps the water would be fertilized and clean.

Videos: 


 1. This is one example of what happens when two different substances mix together. Some react and some don't react at all, but in this case we have a large reaction. The first reaction is the alcohol turns yellow and then as bromine dissolves, it turns red. 
2. Water is one of the substances that cant get almost any element onto fire, and that's what makes this video unique. When lithium is placed into a tray of water, flames come out of the lithium.
3. Another video that has a mix of water and cesium. Cesium when mixed with water it reacts somewhat like fireworks. 
4 Like other substances that are mixed with water, this one also gets lit on fire. This is what happens when the two potassium and water are mixed.
 5. When sodium and potassium are mixed they can create an extreme explosion that can be a hazard if not following the lab safety rules.
6. In this video we see how the liquid nitrogen spreads over the pool like a big blanket. This shows another reaction, liquid nitrogen and water in this case were not mixed...they cannot be. It will stay separated.
7. This one shows how two different substances can react. Not many substances react similarly, this substance fizzed up and made the beaker overflow. This a very unique project there are not many reactions like this.
8. Another reaction of how it explodes. I think that this explosion was not created because the gummy bears color or anything else, but the sugar and theother substance put in created this explosion.
9. It is not clearly explained what these substances are and why this happens when they are mixed.

Know:
  • I understand and i know how to identify the most of it
  • I know how to find out what the name of an element is, how many electrons it has, how to find out the atomic mass and the neutrons, and i know how many rings every atom has!
  • There are many symbols and signs that represent radioactivity etc. those kind of things.
  • I have also recently learned about atom families.=P
  • I learned what Lewis dot means, its the number of electrons the most outer shell.
  • I know which elements can combine together 
  • I know how many electrons a element family is positive and which is negative.
  • I know how to figure out how many electrons there is on every shell on an atom!
What i want to Know:
  • How many elements are needed to create another?
  • How many elements are there left to be discovered?
  • Why do some elements radio act when they are combined?

Goals

I have many goals for this year. The most important one is definitely organization and responsibility. I am already losing some of my work, but i will try my best to fix that problem. Motivation. Motivation is one of the big thing the teachers look at to grade you on, i don't act like I'm really motivated that's why some of my grades are lower. I have many questions in my head during classes but i don't know why i don't ask them, by asking those questions i might understand more about the topic, then i did before. I'm not so sure if i have behavior problems, but i know i have to stop interrupting people while they're talking, and that i shouldn't talk about things not related to the topic were doing in class. Those are my goals for this year, I'm sure there is much more but these are the main ones and the ones i wanna focus on to fix! =]
